Cross is one of the photographs associated with Ed Templeton’s acclaimed autobiographical book Deformer, published by Damiani / Alleged Press in 2008.
Photographed in 2004, the image brings together several recurring elements in Templeton’s work: American identity, religion, public space and the contradictions of Southern Californian life. A man carrying a monumental cross inscribed “JESUS IS LORD” passes beneath an American flag, transforming an everyday street scene into an image charged with cultural and symbolic tension.
This chromogenic colour print was produced in 2008 for the limited Collector’s Edition of Deformer, issued in an edition of 200. This example is number 180/200, signed and dated by Ed Templeton.
The photograph is accompanied by the original Deformer book in mint condition and its original slipcase in very good condition. The print is presented in a custom-made white wood frame with museum anti-reflective glass.
